This week we remember the gallant Ballymurphy team who won the Senior Football Championship in 1953. They beat Palatine on a scoreline of 1-7 to 1-5 after they had been beaten by the Palatine men after a replay in the 1952 final. This photo was taken in McGrath Park a few days after the match and it is the last time the Haughney Cup was awarded to a team as it was replaced the following year. Ballymurphy’s victory in the 1953 final is also the last time the Senior Football title went to the south of the county with Old Leighlin being the furthest south to win it in recent times.
Take a close look at some of the greats from this Ballymurphy team including captain Martin Lennon whose son is current Carlow GAA Secretary Ger Lennon. Can anyone identify the man on the wall in the background?
